IRSAM was approved as an NGO with special consultative status with the ECOSOC in 2006 by the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations. Through this special consultative status, IRSAM—and, by extension, MYAD—is recognized as an NGO with a specialized focus on youth. This gives us the opportunity to attend various UN forums and commissions, both public and private. We can access the UN grounds and sit in on official sessions with member states. We are also able to attend and organize side events, which are often hosted by member states or other accredited NGOs. Ultimately, we are meant to be consulted as civil society stakeholders for the ongoing work in ECOSOC or larger UN bodies. Our status allows us to contribute to policy discussions by submitting both written and oral statements that reflect youth perspectives on the themes being addressed.
